Product Overview

Complete three-piece cooling solution for 1UZ-FE, 2UZ-FE, and 3UZ-FE V8 swaps into 1989–1995 Toyota Pickup and 4Runner chassis — radiator, aluminum fan shroud, and 16" slim pull fan, all to work as an integrated system. If you're sourcing these components separately, you're gambling on fitment between parts that were never designed to work together. This package eliminates that risk. The radiator, shroud, and fan are matched from the start. The shroud mounts directly to the radiator, the fan drops into the shroud, and the whole assembly sits where it needs to sit in a chassis that's been properly modified for the swap.

This is not a plug-and-play installation. The radiator requires permanent chassis fabrication: cutting the lower radiator support, cutting the radiator support side brackets, and a minimum 1" body lift. The shroud and fan bolt to the radiator after it's installed, no additional fabrication required beyond what the radiator already demands. If your recipient chassis is not a 1989–1995 Pickup or 4Runner, contact North West Toys with your core support measurements before ordering.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Matched System, Not Mismatched Parts: Radiator, shroud, and fan are designed to work together — the shroud mounts to the radiator's nutsert points and the fan seats into the shroud without adaptation, shimming, or improvised brackets.
  • Handles Real V8 Heat: The dual-row 1" tube aluminum core provides substantially more cooling capacity than any factory Toyota radiator — necessary for the sustained heat output of a 4.0–4.7L V8 in a compact chassis during trail crawling, desert runs, or loaded highway towing.
  • TIG-Welded, No Epoxy: Radiator tanks are fully TIG-welded aluminum — not epoxy-bonded. Epoxy joints crack and delaminate under repeated thermal cycling; welded joints don't.
  • Slim Fan Preserves Engine Bay Clearance: The 16" slim pull fan profile is sized specifically for the tight UZ swap engine bay. A full-depth fan at this diameter would create clearance problems that don't exist with this setup.
  • Shroud Maximizes Fan Efficiency: Without a shroud, an electric fan pulls air through only a fraction of the core, directly in front of it, and ignores the rest. The aluminum shroud forces all airflow through the full core, the only way to achieve the cooling performance the radiator is capable of delivering.
  • Made and Sourced in the USA: The radiator is made and machined in the USA. Backed by a 5-year warranty.

⚠ Fabrication Requirements — Read Before Ordering

This package is not plug-and-play. The radiator requires the following permanent chassis modifications before installation:

  • Cut the lower radiator support across the bottom to clear the radiator core
  • Cut the radiator support side brackets to achieve proper core width clearance
  • Minimum 1" body lift required for adequate hood clearance and proper radiator positioning

The shroud and fan bolt to the radiator after it is installed — no additional cuts or chassis modifications are required beyond the radiator fabrication work above. These cuts are irreversible. If you are not prepared to perform chassis fabrication, this package is not the right fit for your build. If your recipient chassis is not a 1989–1995 Pickup or 4Runner, contact North West Toys with your core support measurements before ordering.

Fitment

Year Model Engine (Swap)
1989–1995 Toyota Pickup (2WD & 4WD) 1UZ-FE, 2UZ-FE, or 3UZ-FE V8 swap
1989–1995 Toyota 4Runner 1UZ-FE, 2UZ-FE, or 3UZ-FE V8 swap
Other chassis Custom / non-standard applications Contact NWT with core support measurements — built to fit

Important: Fitment is determined by the recipient chassis year and model, not by which UZ engine you are installing. All three UZ variants — 1UZ-FE, 2UZ-FE, and 3UZ-FE — use the same package for standard 1989–1995 Pickup and 4Runner applications. If your recipient vehicle is not a 1989–1995 Pickup or 4Runner, contact Northwest Toys with precise measurements of your core support opening before placing an order. This package is designed for use with NWT motor mount and header configurations — compatibility with other swap kits should be confirmed before purchase.

Installation & Maintenance

Installation Difficulty: Advanced / Expert fabrication required (radiator); Intermediate (shroud and fan after radiator is installed)
Tools Required: Angle grinder or cutting wheel, welder (recommended for reinforcing cut edges), drill, torque wrench, wire crimps or soldering kit for fan wiring, radiator hose clamps, coolant
Professional Installation: Strongly recommended for the radiator chassis fabrication — core support cuts are permanent. Shroud and fan mounting can be completed by a competent DIY builder once the radiator is in place.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Use a 50/50 mix of Toyota-compatible coolant and distilled water — tap water causes mineral buildup in aluminum cores that progressively reduces cooling efficiency
  • Flush and replace coolant every 2 years or 30,000 miles to prevent electrolytic corrosion in aluminum tanks and cores
  • Inspect nutsert mounting points and shroud fasteners annually — off-road vibration works hardware loose over time
  • Verify fan wiring connections and ground quality at each service interval — a poor ground causes fan undervoltage and reduces airflow at exactly the moments you need it most

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does this package fit all three UZ variants — 1UZ, 2UZ, and 3UZ?
A: Yes. The NWT UZ Cooling Package is compatible with 1UZ-FE, 2UZ-FE, and 3UZ-FE engines. Fitment is determined by the recipient chassis year and model, not by which UZ engine you are installing. All three variants use the same package for standard 1989–1995 Pickup and 4Runner applications.

Q: What chassis modifications are required to install this package?
A: The radiator requires three permanent modifications: cutting the lower radiator support across the bottom, cutting the radiator support side brackets, and installing a minimum 1" body lift. The shroud and fan bolt directly to the radiator after it's mounted — no additional chassis fabrication is required for either component.

Q: Does the shroud require any welding or cutting?
A: No. The aluminum shroud mounts directly to the radiator's pre-installed nutserts. Once the radiator is in place, the shroud bolts on without additional cuts, welding, or bracket fabrication.

Q: Is a thermostatic fan controller included?
A: No. This package includes only the radiator, shroud, and fan. A thermostatic fan controller and wiring harness are not included. If you want a complete plug-in cooling system with fan control, see the NWT 1UZ Cooling System Package, which adds the controller, harness, and upper and lower radiator hoses.

Q: My vehicle is not a 1989–1995 Pickup or 4Runner — can I still order this package?
A: Possibly. Non-standard chassis applications require precise measurements of your core support opening before we can confirm fitment. Contact sales@northwesttoysllc.com with your measurements before ordering — we build to order, and custom sizing may be available.

Q: How long does this package take to ship?
A: This package is built to order and ships in approximately 4–6 weeks. Plan your build timeline accordingly — do not order if you need the part quickly.

Signs Your UZ Swap Cooling System Is Undersized or Failing

  • Coolant temperature climbing above normal on the highway or in slow trail traffic — especially with the factory radiator still in place
  • Overheating during low-speed crawling or prolonged idling in hot weather, where ram airflow through the core is minimal and fan coverage matters most
  • Electric fan running constantly without bringing temps down — a sign of insufficient core capacity, not just fan output
  • Coolant loss without visible external leaks — often a pressurized system pushing past an undersized or degraded radiator cap seal
  • Steam or a sweet smell from the engine bay after hard use — coolant boiling off from an overworked core

Why This Package Exists

A UZ V8 produces more combustion heat than any engine Toyota ever put in a 1989–1995 Pickup or 4Runner from the factory. The stock cooling infrastructure on these chassis — radiator size, airflow path, fan setup — was engineered for inline-four and V6 thermal loads. Dropping a 4.0–4.7L V8 into that system and hoping the factory radiator keeps up isn't a build strategy; it's a way to cook an engine on the first hot day or the first slow trail section.

Most builders source a radiator, then figure out a shroud, then bolt on whatever fan fits. The result is usually a radiator with a shroud that doesn't seal properly against the core, a fan that's either too small to move enough air or too deep to clear the engine, and cooling performance that's better than stock but well short of what the engine actually needs. The NWT UZ Cooling Package exists because these three components need to be designed around each other — and when they are, the system works the way it's supposed to.

If you want to add fan control and hoses in the same order, step up to the NWT 1UZ Cooling System Package. If you have hoses handled and just need the core three components in a matched set, this is the package.
